Carolin Arndt

I have a PhD in environmental sciences from the Arctic University Centre in Svalbard, Norway (2002-2005). Specialized in polar marine research with a strong focus in oceanography and ecosystem analysis I studied the ecosystem dynamics in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. Sea ice is a dominant feature in both polar marine ecosystems, playing a central role in physical processes and providing an essential habitat for organisms ranging in size from viruses to whales. During my PhD studies I focussed on the spatial and temporal variability in community data of ice-associated organisms, and the physical and biological processes that drive such variability.

I collected most of the data during large field expeditions into the High Arctic including ice camps and ice-diving operations. Thanks to a generous budget provided by the industry, a wonderful team of co-workers, efficient work flow and good time management skills I completed my PhD studies within three years’ time.

Key achievements in my scientific career include the establishment of many international co-operations which resulted in several peer-reviewed first-author publications.
