I developed much of my expertise in science communications and administration on the job and by way of postgraduate studies.
I am currently working as Chief Communication Officer for the European initative Climate-KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) which facilitates climate innovations through entrepreneurial education and partnerships between members of the public, private and academic worlds. Climate-KIC was launched in December 2009 and encompasses five coordination centres and six regions spread across Europe. My responsibility is to conceptualize and realize the global communication strategy for this initative and lead a decentralized group of national and regional Communication Officers.
In a different function, I am developing science communications of the international SPARC programme based at ETH Zurich, which focuses on the coordination of stratosphere-troposphere research to increase our understanding of climate processes.
Before that I worked as Communication Officer for the international PAGES (Past Global Changes) project, specifically employed to advance the external communication strategy to improve outreach to developing country and early-career scientists.
From 2009 to 2010, I held the position of Programme Officer with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an initiative funded by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme. My responsibility was to provide scientific and technical support to the management, various task forces and working groups, and to help develop the official documents in preparation for sessions and meetings of the IPCC. The Panel will issue its fifth assessment report on the status of global climate in 2013/14.
From 2006 to 2009, I worked as Science Communications Officer for the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In particular, I developed the internal and external communication strategy, including a large portfolio of tools and products for the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP, 2006-2009); prepared feature articles sent to the WMO Members for the World Climate Programme (WCP, 2006-2007); created a new-look-and-feel web-portal and newsletter for the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP, 2008); designed various outreach materials for the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW, 2008); and launched a common web-portal for the WMO Research Department (RES, 2008).
Alongside work, during 2008, 2009 and 2010, I studied Communications Management at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Economics and the Swiss Media School (MAZ), both in Switzerland. The curriculum included training sessions in a variety of communication tools; the target-oriented use of different communication channels; development and implementation of communication strategies; science communication; intercultural communication; event and meeting preparations; writing skills and rhetorics; leadership and mentoring. In addition, I have some formal training in professional layout/graphics design and project management.
Since 2006, I am working as a freelance science journalist and have published regularly in a popular science magazine and newspapers.
